(More customer reviews)It is well known that heat is the enemy of electronics. I recently bought a used 17" widescreen notebook computer that is notorious for running hot. With 3 fans, it is also pretty noisy and at close to 10 lb. it is hefty. Would a cooling stand help? After some research I decided on the Rocketfish.
This is a lightweight plastic item, yet rigid and strong. It has a slight tilt to raise the back of the keyboard and there are two flip-out feet to increase the angle even more. The fan runs off a USB port and the USB cable stows in a handy compartment on the stand.
The Rocketfish works just fine. It has no difficulty standing up to the weight of my "barely" portable notebook. At just under 13" wide I ws concerned if it would be stable under my 16" wide notebook. No problem at all. It is a "universal" product, so it won't fit all notebooks the same. For my notebook, I had to be careful to position it so that it didn't block any of the fans or cooling vents. The rear feet sit only partially on the stand, but even with this it is stable. The Rocketfish fan is very quiet and noise from the notebook is diminished. I'm not sure if this is because 1) the fans are running less, 2) the space under the notebook changes how the fan noise is reflected off the desktop or 3) the space under the fans decreases the air turbulence they produce. I think turbulence may be the big issue but whichever it is, the computer is definitely quieter.
I ran a vacuum cleaner over the notebook's cooling vents, set it up on the stand, and connected the Rocketfish's fan to a USB port. Final results were that it runs about 15 degrees cooler. Success!
One comment on portability. This unit is about as small as it can be. None of the cooling stands I know of would be any more portable. The only thing I can think of that would help would be if it folded up. A folding unit that is just as strong and rigid would be nice, but until then, the Rocketfish RF-LAPCOL is a good choice.
