(More customer reviews)I researched A LOT before choosing a keyboard for my iPad 2. I never thought I'd get an iPad, but when the 2 came out, I caved b/c I wanted to be able to have something I could easily carry for certain work projects and I wanted to watch Netflix with it propped on the treadmill. For work, I wanted a keyboard. It came down between the Apple wireless keyboard and this one. I think the Apple is definitely better for having no adjustment issues as it is full sized. But who wants to carry around another item? That defeated one of the purposes of my getting an iPad. The other keyboards I looked into all got low ratings for how sturdy the keys were -- you didn't feel like you were typing on a real keyboard. That is NOT the case with the Logitech. It has great sturdy keys.
There are only a couple of downsides to this in my opinion. The first, and main one, is that you have to get used to typing on a slightly smaller keyboard. But I've been getting used to it as I've been typing on it. And it doesn't take too long to do that because the keyboard is so nice, although if I haven't used it for a week or so, I have to get re-used to using it. I'm okay with that though because the keyboard feels like a real computer. Part of me wishes they'd make it wider even though that would increase the case size. Of course, then it wouldn't fit in the protective sleeves, and I like the fact I can put my iPad, while it's secure in the Logitech keyboard case, in my purple Belkin protective cover. Perfect fit. So the keyboard being slightly smaller than standard is the only real issue for me that I would change if there were a prefect tech world.
The second, minor issue, is I wish you could put a protective silicone skin on the back and it still fit in the case. But I think a Zagg skin may work on the back and still fit in this. Ooh, and one more thing is that is is a tight fit, so it can be a little hard sometimes to pull out of the case when you have it stored it in. I have short finger nails, so it's hard to pull out, but not impossible, and I'm getting better at it, so this isn't a deal breaker by any means. And I DO really like that it's fits very securely and won't fall out of the case. It provides nice protection.
As for buying from this retailer, DO NOT do it unless they bring the price down. At $150, this is a 50 percent markup (I took one star off for that, even though I probably should have taken four stars off for the price issue), and I took one star off for the issues I listed above. I don't know if this was listed so high because it was hard to find when it first came out. For whatever reason, it is INSANE. Zagg/Logitech sells it for $99.95, and I recommend them. GET IT FROM THE MANUFACTURER and SAVE $50. There is no reason for this insane markup. But, as for the product itself, there is nothing else like this on the market. It is very nice. I wish there was a leather case cover that contained a keyboard that had sturdy keys, but no one has made that yet, so I am happy with my purchase (from Zagg/Logitech). People are really impressed when they see me typing on it and want one, too.
This keyboard feels sturdier when typing when the iPad is horizontal, but it works both ways. I play Words with Friends on it and use other apps in the vertical mode. I e-mail and use the internet/Safari in the horizontal mode. It is a very solid keyboard and a good looking product. More than one friend has told me, "You always are one step ahead of everyone on the best products" when they saw it. I really am not. I just googled iPad keyboards and discovered raves for this for the original iPad, so I waited until the iPad 2 version came out and am glad I did.
June 5, 2011 update: I see since I wrote my review less than one week ago, the retailer has lowered the price by $20. They still put a 30 PERCENT markup on the manufacturer's retail price, which is still insane. Let me reiterate to PLEASE get this from the manufacturer (Zagg/Logitech), not from this retailer. Zagg/Logitech are wonderful, have great customer service, and sell it for $99.95 with free shipping on their web site and have from day one. It also appears (from clicking on AAABuy's shipping rates), this seller also charges for shipping in addition to tacking on a large markup. Unless the price goes down to $75 here and is $25 less than the manufacturer, please do not even consider it because the markup here is SHADY. And it's shady that after the reviews point out AAABuy's insane markup, this seller only lowered the price to 30 percent ABOVE retail as opposed to its earlier 50 percent above retail. It is still bizarrely overpriced, and I personally would never trust this seller. I assume the only reason they lowered it at all is because people have been pointing out their ridiculous overpricing.
June 12, 2011 update (my final update): I just wanted to add that since my last update, one week later, the retailer has FINALLY lowered the price to what it actually retails for -- the $99.99 that the Logitech Keyboard Case by ZAGG for iPad 2 has always sold for (with free shipping) on the manufacturer's site, [...]. So it would appear they have read the reviews and finally ditched their fraudulent (IMHO) markup. I really hope no one got suckered in by their earlier insanely inflated price. And if they did, they should definitely work to receive a refund for any amount they paid over the $99.99 retail price.
I would also like to note that since I first posted my review for this product and etailer two weeks ago (as well as since my last update a week ago), the etailer has now changed it's name from "AAABuy" to "MobileCityOnline." What is up with that? Why the name change? I view this as yet another move that sets off my shady behavior radar. My SHADAR, so to speak. I don't like to buy important equipment that could malfunction and require customer service from shady etailers who change their names within a matter of days. Very strange, unreliable behavior to say the least.
And I noticed that they are still charging shipping prices (lowered to a reasonable $2.98 now with this latest offer), so yet again, the Logitech Keyboard Case by ZAGG for iPad 2, which has free shipping (as always) from the manufacturer remains the cheapest and most reliable way to buy this product. And, I'd like to add, the manufacturer/retailer (ZAGG.com) provides really reliable customer service (from my limited interaction). I had questions and contacted them and can attest to their promptness and thoroughness in their responses. From when I first went looking online to buy this keyboard case (and assuming I would get it from Amazon), this entire offer from "AAABuy" or "MobileCityOnline" or "WhateverTheyChooseToCallThemselvesNext" has been one bizarre shady move after another. They eventually lowered the price but only after customers cared enough to alert others as to their blatant shadiness. That is how I first found out (thank you, earlier reviewer) and that is why I also wanted to share my observations with others. Stay FAR FAR away from buying here. Go to ZAGG.com.
June 23, 2011 update: I know I said the last update would be my last, but I checked this page out again purely out of curiosity and now it is once again sold by "AAABuy" instead of the "MobileCityOnline" of the last couple of weeks. And, more importantly, they have once again put a 30 percent mark UP on the price -- raising it from the $99.99 it retails for back to $129.50 plus shipping. I hope no one falls for this. Please get it here -- [...] -- and save yourself some money and the risk of dealing with this very shady company.
Usage update: I have been using my keyboard regularly since i got it, and I am still really liking it. It's one of those products that grew on me because I got used to typing on it and got a rhythm with it. It holds a charge a long time (knock wood -- I hope that continues). I'm pleased with my purchase and recommend it to other iPad 2 users (make sure you get the correct version so it will fit tightly) -- just not from this shady seller.
