I've been a fan of Powermat for a while. I had the system on my old Blackberry 83xx series and it worked great. When it was time to upgrade to the new 8500 series the Powermat receiver door was a must. Unfortunately the new receiver door is really disappointing. The 83xx model replaced the Blackberry's battery door and had internal connections to the battery circuit inside the phone, so there was nothing external to the replacement battery compartment door. Not so with the new Powermat receiver, which has a small USB connector that runs from the battery door to the phone's charger input. There are three problems with this approach:
1. It occupies the Blackberry's charger input so you can't use a car charger with the Blackberry without first unplugging the Powermat cable.
2. It essentially renders inoperative (see #1) the data port on the Blackberry, so while the Powermat receiver is installed you can't connect the Blackberry to your PC.
2. The USB connector is quite fragile. After unplugging it once or twice to accommodate a car charger or a connection to my PC, it snapped off in my hands.
It may be that this design is a limitation imposed by a change in the Blackberry design itself, and that Powermat is making the best of a bad situation. Regardless, this is a poorly engineered solution that negates any of the convenience of the Powermat system.
