Li-PO batteries have limited life through recharges and on the shelf. My first battery lost 35% of its capacity within 4 months and 9 cycles. My second battery lost 35% of its capacity within 6 months and 12 cycles.
When new, the batteries add 30-50% battery life, compared to the main battery. The Thinkpad power board will fully discharge the ultrabay battery before using the main battery. Also, the power board will fully charge the main batter before charging the ultrabay battery. As such, the battery routinely goes from full to zero to full, which is very hard on LiPO batteries.
The real benefit of this battery is when travelling, or otherwise operating with a need for maximum battery life without lugging extra components. Alternatively, this could be used to allow you to swap main batteries without hibernating.
Since the warranty is up on mine, it's fairly unlikely that I will acquire another one of these. It's more likely I'll purchase an additional 9-cell battery and deal with hibernate on swap.
